Gromit's adventures to Tech trails

Gromit does get out about every other day for a little walk.  Today we went to Tech trails which have officially quit grooming.

Nothing fun ever happens around this place!

Then we go out.  What are we doing here?

Checking the rhubarb that's starting to poke out.
Ya spring is springing!

At Tech, they leave stumps on the trail and
hit them with their implements.  Why would they do that?

Ya I'm slow, but I still love to be out on the snow.
I'm so glad we got out to the trail today.

Saturday morning adventures at Churning Rapids

On Saturday morning, while the temps were still cool, we thought we'd run over to High Point Rd. and check out the Churning Rapids trails and see if the snow was hard enough to walk on.

No snow here!  It's a south facing road.

Trails mutt grab a drink, while on the run.

With a nice hard surface, mutts can go fast.

What are these tracks??

Bear!

Snow is really down in the sun exposed areas.
No snow shoes needed, and not even the Ice Trekkers.

Phat bikers were out ahead of us.

Creeks had some ice.  Who used that log to cross it?

Spring creek was bubbling away.

Fishers were out.  We didn't see them.

We romped off-trail here. Snow was nice and hard everywhere.

Everything's waking up.

Hunting was good today, so by the end I was getting tired.

So nice to have the ground frozen. No mud!

Hard to believe we had the place to
ourselves on such a beautiful morning.

Monday Tech Trails romp.

Just when the pack thought skiing was over for the season, yet another ski was snuck in on Monday, at Tech trails.

Our favorite neighbor kids had their Gramma
and Grampa visiting so we had to go say hi too.

At the Mill Rd. trail head parking lot,
we spied this interesting maple sapling.

Let's go! We never get to ski here.

This hill was bare, so we'll not ski down it.

Pretty thin in many spots.  Just ice!

Pilgrim River's up!

Oh, we got to say hi to Karen and Kirby.

Ya you can scratch me, I like that. I'll smile!

Ya Karen, I'm sure we'll see you guys again soon.

Poor Rock Abbey trails near Eagle Harbor

Today we ventured up the Keweenaw to the Poor Rock Abbey trails near Eagle Harbor MI. The Abbey is on the lake shore whereas the mine and trails are part way up the bluff. The mine ruins are from the Arnold Mine which was ran in around 1860 to 63.

Parking on the shoulder was no problem.

The Abbey's cross.

It was about 60 degrees today.

And my little paws were falling through!

Creek is up.

The Arnold mine ruins.

What she doing back there?

We hiked up to the big picnic table.

OK let's head to the gorge!

Oof, lotsa post-holing today.

More post-holing. Some people had been out
without snowshoes and falling in over 1ft deep.

This is near the poor rock and stamp sand pile.

That hill is the poor rock/stamp sand pile.

Cascade along Jacob's Creek.

Tea time!

I don't mind sitting on these benches.

Time for a good roll!
We had such a nice romp here today.

NCT and Courtney Lake and late season snow romp.

With our weekend forecast of temps as high as 60, the season's skiing future looked bleak.  So on Saturday morning we packed the dog truck and headed south to ski on the North Country Trail and at Courtney Lake.

No problem parking on the shoulder of FH 16.

The plow berm snow is black from stamp sand.
We noticed that snowmobiles had been on the NCT recently.

Ball caps and sunglasses required for spring skiing!

The sleds following the trail, spun down
to the dirt and made a mess for skiing.

Bare patches are appearing.

Looks like the sleds, hit the log across the trail.  Ha!

Woodpecker buffet!

Overall we had a pretty nice ski here.

Then we stopped at Courtney Lake for one more ski there.
When can we come back and camp here?

The Circle of Life trail had a bare patch here and there.

We took a break on the bench.

Snow baths are always refreshing!

The spiral tree.

The shallow snow depth made it
good going for dogs with small paws.

This is hunting season.
Although, vermin season is always open!

Kelpies are fast!

Just a little bit of snow, remains on this bench.

Back in the campground.

Are we going to be camping here soon?  It's empty!

After two romps, I was tired and wanted to get back in the truck.

On the drive home, we spied a swan who arrived early.
Saving a spot on its favorite pond perhaps?
